Y11 and Y13 Physics Students Visit TRIGA Research Nuclear Reactor
29. 1. 2025On Thursday, 9th January, our Y11 IGCSE and Y13 IB Diploma Programme Physics students embarked on a journey into the fascinating world of nuclear science with a visit to the TRIGA Research Nuclear Reactor in Ljubljana.
The day kicked off with a thought-provoking lecture on nuclear reactors and radioactivity. Students engaged in hands-on experiments that demonstrated the presence of radiation in the environment, bringing abstract concepts to life and making science truly tangible.
Afterward, the group toured the control room of the reactor, gaining insight into the operational aspects of this powerful research tool. Students observed firsthand how safety and precision are at the core of nuclear technology. The real excitement, however, awaited them at the interactive exhibition. Here, students: took control of a simulation nuclear reactor, exploring how theoretical knowledge translates into practical application, used a real-life contamination meter to check for contamination, mimicking the procedures of professional nuclear scientists and felt the power of the new plasma ball, illustrating the underlying principles of nuclear fusion and igniting curiosity about its potential for clean energy solutions.
This visit not only enhanced students’ understanding of nuclear physics but also provided a glimpse into the potential of cutting-edge research to solve real-world challenges.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to the TRIGA team for hosting this experience.
